      • Product Description: John Wilton-Ely discusses the profound and complex artistic and intellectual relationship between Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Sir John Soane. This was a relationship which nurtured Soane's later career. Piranesi, an eighteenth century printmaker and architect, was a lifelong champion of Rome who published more than a thousand etchings of the Eternal City and its ancient monuments. Soane, Piranesi's English contemporary, was also an architect specialising in the neo-classical style. One of Soane's greatest legacies is Sir John Soane's Museum and some of its most important holdings are a number of preparatory drawings Piranesi developed for a publication on the Greek temples at Paestum. These drawings are great works of art in their own right but are also accomplished examples of Piranesi's topographical observations. This book displays exquisite reproductions of the drawings along with 30 additional images from Piranesi's oeuvre. Combined they offer a unique understanding of early Greek classical architecture seen through the work of an eighteenth-century master. Contains 112 pages. Dimensions: 2x23.5x26.7cm
