'Riva Degli Schiavoni' by Canaletto Print

Regular price £8.00

The Riva Degli Schiavoni print, oil on canvas by Canaletto.

Sir John Soane's three Canalettos, the Riva degli Schiavoni, the Piazza di San Marco and the Rialto Bridge are among the most celebrated works of art in his Museum.  The Riva is regarded as one of the half-dozen finest works by Canaletto in existence.

This picture has been identified (Binion, 1990) as the painting described as 'from S. Biagio as far as the Salute' which was purchased from Canaletto by Marshal Johann Matthias Schulenburg (1661- 1747) in February 1736 for 100 zecchini; it was offered for sale in 1775 by the Schulenberg family at Christie's (Lot 60) but bought in at 199 guineas; purchased at an unknown date by Charles-Alexandre Calonne; it is probably the painting of 'The Grand Canal' sold for 165 guineas at Skinner's auction rooms in the Calonne sale in 1795; then in the collection of William Beckford (1759-1844) at Fonthill; purchased by John Soane at the Fonthill Splendens sale in 1807, Phillip's, Lot 605 for 150 guineas
