"Dear tourist, I would like you to join me on a walk, one that begins in the heart of London. The streets we will tread are not quiet. They speak loudly of pride and empire. The route we will trace together stretches back in time and leads directly to Egypt."

Sara Sallam's A Tourist Handbook for Egypt Outside of Egypt is a series of handbooks designed to guide tourists seeking to visit Egyptian sights across European cities. The second volume traces a route through central London, beginning with Britain’s defeat of Napoleon’s Egyptian conquest in 1802 and culminating in the occupation of Egypt in 1882.

This book contains collages that contrast photographs of London’s commemorative statues and imperial architecture with 19th-century paintings of corresponding events in Egypt. By questioning which Western historical narratives are commemorated, it further exposes the entangled relationship between Britain’s imperial expansion and the extractive practices that accompanied it, especially the removal of Egyptian antiquities.

Drawing on archival research and visual juxtaposition, it offers a critical reading of the imperial legacies that shaped London’s urban landscape today.
