Fanciful Figures Exhibition Catalogue

Fanciful Figures turns viewers’ attention to ‘staffage’, the small human and animal figures in architectural drawings, which became increasingly popular during the eighteenth century. Drawing on the drafting practices of past and present, Fanciful Figures illustrates staffage’s ability to animate architects’ visions, both for built projects and unrealised designs.

This book, published alongside the exhibition, focuses on the small figures in these often giant architectural images. Beautiful illustrations and expert commentary reveal the way in which these figures became an important aspect of architectural drawing and show that although small, these fascinating figures often steal the show.
