Whilst Sir John Soane's reputation as a brilliant and forward-thinking architect is well established, far less is known about his approach as a collector. 

This new book, by former Sir John Soane's Museum director Bruce Boucher, focuses on what Soane's collection reveals about the psychology of collecting. Exploring the items which captured the great architect’s interest and including sections on the display of antiquities, his fascination with ruins and his support of contemporary British painting and sculpture. 

The book gives an insight into the ways in which his personal life and career informed his collecting habits and concludes with an epilogue that examines the challenges of turning a private house and collection into a public museum.
