Joseph Michael Gandy (1771 - 1843)

Various designs for Public and Private buildings 1780-1815

Along with JMW Turner, another son of Romanticism with whom Soane shared a great collaborative friendship was Joseph Michael Gandy, a draughtsman and architect in his own right who brought Soane’s architectural vision to life through a myriad of grand watercolours. Like Soane, Gandy was also humbly born and exhibited great success at the Royal Academy, where in 1790 he won the same Gold Medal that had facilitated Soane’s Grand Tour in 1778. Gandy approached Soane in 1798 looking for work, and Soane was all too happy to employ the gifted artist to paint dramatic views of realised and unrealised projects, many of which were exhibited at the RA. For nearly 40 years the two geniuses supported each other – Gandy as showman, Soane as patron – and Gandy’s theatrical architectural watercolours are certainly one of the highlights of the museum’s collection.
