Crude Hints

A Real and Speculative Tour of Sir John Soane’s Museum

In 1812, John Soane wrote Crude Hints towards an History of my House, a strange and perplexing text in which he imagined his home as a ruin centuries in the future, inspected by visitors who speculate on its origins, function and meaning. In this tour, we bring the museum that Soane imagined viewers would encounter to life.

Led by museum curators, the tour will delve into the intriguing stories that Soane constructed around the museum, its spaces and its objects: from the iconic Domed Area to the mysterious Monk’s Parlour.

Along the journey, you will also encounter four characters that Soane suggested that visitors might infer the museum to have been inhabited, which have been strikingly brought to life by Studio MUTT for the exhibition Out of Character (12 September – 18 November 2018).

Colourful, rich in decoration and drawing from the wealth of source material in the Museum and Soane’s work, the four characters – a Lawyer, a Monk, a Magician and an Architect – communicate across time with the spaces they inhabit.

The tour will conclude with a themed cocktail in the No. 12 Breakfast Room – one of the earliest and most beautiful rooms in the Museum.

Tours are led in small groups of fifteen people and start every 15 minutes from 6.00pm until 8.15pm. To book choose the date (21 Sept) and then your desired time slot.
