Online Panel Discussion: Death, Bereavement and Creative Approaches to Memorialising, Friday 20 May, 18.30

Regular price £0.00

Artist Anne-Marie Creamer’s short film Dear Friend, I Can No Longer Hear You, currently showing at Sir John Soane’s Museum, is an imagined recreation of his beloved late wife Eliza’s bedchamber, accompanied by a soundtrack by Creamer and composer Verity Standen adapted from the diaries of John Soane and two family friends in the hours, days and months after Eliza’s death. Anne-Marie and Helen Dorey, Deputy Director and Inspectress, Sir John Soane’s Museum will discuss Dear Friend.. as opening up a fresh space to consider the Soane Museum as a place also marked by bereavement, vulnerability; and creative approaches to memorialising, at a time when these issues resonate for many after two years of global pandemic. Artist Oreet Ashery will share perspective, especially in the light of her recent film Dying Under Your Eyes, which explores the sudden death of Ashery's elderly father in 2018, focusing on ageing, dying, mourning and intimate surveillance. While Ashery’s Revisiting Genesis will help us expand on creative approaches to loss and the lived experience of chronic illness in the digital era, digital afterlife and legacy, (both seen at at the Wellcome in 2019-20). Dr Kathryn Mannix, a palliative care Consultant and feted writer, will help us think about the trajectory of dying itself; about grieving the losses we encounter as a progressive illness changes our capabilities and self-view; the Soane house in the context of ‘the vigil' families sit at deathbeds, and Dear Friend as a recreation of a mourned wife's room and her deathbed, from which she is eternally absent. The event will be moderated by Melanie Keen, Director, Wellcome Trust.
