As a student on the Grand Tour, Sir John Soane would have carried sketch books with him to draw observational sketches. He continued to sketch throughout his life, as this was an important part of his architectural practice. Some of these sketches still survive in our collection to this day.
Two pencils set in a self-coloured black wood with a gum. The first has a white leading to write and draw on all the supports and the other one has a graphic HB lead to express yourself on dark papers and let an original stamp.
