Year Zero is back for its second series at the Soane. Six speakers come together to discuss tipping points in architecture.

For the most part, architectural history in Britain is the story of gradual change and evolution, of long term trends that give meaning to events as they unfold, even moments of apparent crescendo and climax. From time to time, however, old certainties are overturned, new ideas break free and the clock of history is reset: we call this a Year Zero.

In the sixth and final talk, Erin McKellar, researcher and curator, discusses 1940: from the moment the first German bombs fell on London and the following years of mass mobilisation, this period was the first time that women architects in Britain engaged in public-facing projects on a wide scale.

Erin McKellar is Assistant Curator, Exhibitions at Sir John Soane’s Museum. In addition to contributing to the Soane’s exhibition programme, she researches the design cultures of the 1930s and 1940s with a particular focus on the role of women and children. She recently published “Designing the Child’s World: Ernö Goldfinger and the Role of the Architect, 1933-1946” in the Journal of Design History. She has previously been a fellow of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and the Clarence S. Stein Institute for Urban and Landscape Studies at Cornell University, and has worked in collections at Royal Holloway, University of London.

About the series:

This series, in its second iteration and organised in partnership with Machine Books - invites writers, critics, historians and architects to identify and reflect on a single Year Zero – when the trajectories of architectural and broader history connect and coincide and the status quo is changed forever. Each speaker has written a complimentary essay, available to purchase as an ebook, discussing their own Year Zero.
